Do your Windows XP desktop icons load in one by one during login? If so this could be because your icon database has become corrupted. This can be frustating but is easily repaired. To repair the icon database, just follow these quick steps.

 

Windows XP properties

Right click anywhere on your desktop and click on Properties.The Display Properties window will appear, click the settings tab and then click on the color quality drop down box. Select 16bit and click Apply and then yes, this will rebuild the icon database. Once complete just switch it back by clicking the Color quality box and selecting the original setting e.g. highest 32bit.
